Chapter 15
I let loose a long sigh. âSwift, Iâve been trying to tell youâ¦well, I wasnât at first, but thenâ¦oh hell.â I told him all about the Admiralâs purported privileges, and what Bobbi Paxton had revealed about the smugglingâ¦and the fact the warehouse wasnât bonded.
âBut it has to be bonded.â He was astounded. âIf Morgan kept stock in an unauthorised warehouse, he risked losing his licence and his business and⦠everything. Oh, God, I never dreamtâ¦â He put his head in his hands. âWhy didnât you tell me?â
I opened my mouth, then shut it again. Greggs returned to retrieve the tray, providing a fortuitous diversion.
He bent to whisper. âI have prepared a decanter of the Courvoisier. Should I bring it in, sir?â
âYes, please.â
âDamn it.â Swift slammed a hand on the desk and spoke with rage in his voice. âFrobisherâs responsible for this and heâs going to answer for it.â He got up and stormed out, fury in every sinew.
âTrouble, sir?â Greggs remarked.
âTheyâre smuggling.â
âAh yes, very unsettling, sir.â
âAs if things werenât sticky enough.â
âAnd the clock is ticking, sir.â He gathered the tray and headed for the door.
âYes, thank you, I do know that,â I retorted as he wobbled off.
Swift marched Frobisher into the room.
âIt wasnât me. Morgan sent your whisky here,â his Lordship was protesting. âYou canât blame me for his decision, youâre being bally unfair.â
âYou know the damned rules as well as I do. What the hell were you thinking?â Swift was beside himself. âIt has to go into a Bonded Warehouse.â
âWeâre exempt. The Admiral was a friend of the King, the Frobishers haveâ¦â
âSit down,â Swift yelled.
Frobisher sank into a chair, still protesting. âWe have specialâ¦â
âDo you really think that counts for anything in this day and age?â Swift snarled.
âIt does in our circles.â Frobisher attempted aristocratic disdain but sounded like a prinking coxcomb.
âThatâs why you were panicking when we talked about bringing in Scotland Yard.â Swift barely took breath. âIf the law discovers whatâs in the warehouse, it will all be confiscated and we could be jailed.â He raised his voice to a bellow. âItâs not just my whisky, you idiot, itâs the whole damned lot.â
Frobisher waved his hands up and down. âShush, be quiet, he mustnât hear you.â He turned to me. âPlease Lennox, tell him not to shout like that.â
âSwift,â I spoke sharply. âJust a minute.â
Swift was practically baring his teeth. âWhat?â
I leaned toward Frobisher, who was trying to shrink through the back of his chair. âWho mustnât hear us, Frobisher?â I demanded.
âI⦠I⦠aaahhh.â He put his fingers over his mouth.
âYou mean Kenyon mustnât hear?â I supplied the answer. âDid you and Morgan sell him this fiction about your family having immunity from Excise duty?â
Swift cottoned on. âAnd Morgan inflated the value of his business based on the lie, didnât he?â
It was falling into place â the secrets, the subterfuge â and it added a new dimension to Morganâs motives.
âHe⦠Iâ¦â Frobisher had blanched deathly white, his scant hair standing on end around his bald patch.
âKenyon paid far more than Morganâs business was worth,â I stated.
